On Monday, May 10th, 2004, Andrew Bird performed (along with the Crash Test Dummies) on the WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour. This performance blew me away, and as you can tell when you watch this, it was obvious he blew away everyone that saw him. This was the first time I witnessed him performing alone, doing all of the work himself with his now-infamous looping setup.

I included remarks made about or to Bird during the performances because I think they are interesting.

This has to be my favorite part of the show; it is worth noting that this was done off the air, and only audience members or those watching this video later saw this, the people listening on the radio didn't get to see performance of this song, which is too bad because I think it really rocks. At the beginning of this, after Michael Jonathan (sorry to his fans, but I thought this was weird) asks Bird to whistle, Bird asks "I'm supposed to play, right?" you can hear a woman in the audience say something like "Yes, please! Play!" If she wasn't already a fan of Bird, I bet she was when she left!

  • at around 3:05 he looked like he was trying to ellicit some type of response or applause from the audience.

  • @miloszewski : I can see that, I have always thought that he was merely frustrated because he almost missed an intended note or was feeling a bit unsure for a brief moment. This video was taken at a time when he was still getting used to his one-man-show style of looping, self-described as a "tight-rope act;" perhaps he almost lost his footing for a moment.

But yeah - his mugging should've elicited an audience response, but I think they were too enraptured with what they were watching...

  • what I think is cool about andrew bird's live stuff is that he is always experimenting with his songs, and everybody gets to see him do spontaneous stuff.

  • Omgosh, If you hear this song now it's completely different. He developes every time he plays, it's amazing!

  • The Swan! It's neat that he whistled a part from the song that wasn't the beginning. He just thought of it right off the top of his head.

  • i saw him live last night. as in 2010. to watch this from 2004 is so interesting. the younger him, still so charming and shy. he is brilliance at its best. i love him very much. this is a great video

  • 3:21 on...he matches his picking with his vocal melody. fuck.

  • Oh my gosh! He's so cute at the end when the singer of CTD is all flattering him he looks all like "Please.....I'm shy!" AWWWWWWW!

  • Great rendition of My Skin, Is. The man is a true artist.

  • @JasonBunting : héy, thanxxx a million for up'n this absolute ùtter über gem !!

2:54 till 3:14 looks to me as if Andrew wasn't unsure at all, nor was he aiming for any response or connection with the audience here: it's just an expression of concentration on this complex loop imho.

also thanx for the background info !!

I'm sure it wasn't jealousy or intended badly, but that Michael Jonathan could really take a lesson in showing some basics of respect...

    Andrew made him very tiny.

  • Aw, 6:27! And 6:56. He's all bashful and humble. Wonderful man.

  • Dude is just too cool for school
