All about the Mid-Autumn Festival / the Moon Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival is on August 15th of the lunar calendar. On that day, there is always the roundest moon in a year.
In Chinese custom, a full moon means family reunion. Because of this, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunions.
On this day, many Chinese families enjoy watching the full moon together in parks. The families will buy sweety cakes, "Moon Cakes", and starfruits and pomelo.
Then, each member of the family will eat a piece of the cake to show their unity. Some moon cakes have salted yolks in them. When we slice a moon cake, we can see a salted yolk in the centre. It looks just like a full moon! Moreover, eating ice cream moon cakes becomes more popular in Hong Kong. People share moon cakes with their friends and relatives.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is also the season of pomelos which symbolizes prosperity in Chinese tradition.
Many children used pomelo peels to make lanterns in the past. Nowadays, children would prefer playing with plastic lanterns to paper lanterns. Some youths may burn many candles and spray the wax with water at the playground on that day. However, it is very dangerous and illegal in Hong Kong! We should never burn the wax and spray with water!
