John "Toast" Oast of Fishyaker.com demonstrates how easy it is to build a loading device to assist in getting your yak to your racks.

This one was a bit tougher. The problem is that it would need to be pretty specific for the vehicle. I used 3/4 inch PVC, but may replace the cross bar with steel to make it stronger.

Here's the breakdown...

1 - 8 foot 3/4" PVC pipe
2 - 3/4" PVC T fittings
2 - 3/4" PVC 90 degree fittings
1 - 3/4" centered pipe insulation

I cut the PVC into 5 pieces (Additional cross pieces may be used for reinforcement.). The top pieces are longer than the lower two. The cross bar just needs to be long enough to cover your keel width.

With this device, you can just pick up one end of the yak, place it on the load bar, then push the other end forwards. It keeps you from needing to lift your entire kayak at once.

  • He who lives in glass houses should not throw stones...

  • ok can you tell me what this does? i need to make a rack for my truck to hold 3 yaks

    thanks

  • The bar makes it easier to load the kayak/canoe onto the existing racks without scratching the paint. Just put one end of the boat up on the bar, then shove the rest of the boat on up. That way you only have to pick up one end at a time.

  • Ok Im fairly new to kayaking and to you tube. I have a 14 foot future beach fishing kayak . Im 5'6" I have a Toyota van . My huge issue beside being blond is that I have a huge problem trying to keep kayak from pitching from one side or the other and rolling off the side of the van before I can get it ontop the van .I try leaning it against the back of the van.. its so wide and so cumbersome it pitches to one side before I can get a grip it plops to the ground. I'd appreciate any and all ideas

  • Would've been nice to see proof of concept by you actually using it! :(

  • I just got a great Idea from your video. I could construct a rack in the same manner that would allow me to put kayaks in the bed of my truck and not worry about leaning them on the cab of the truck.
