Little Old Log Cabin in the Lane was written in 1871 by William Shakespeare Hayes, who spent time in a Union jail for writing seditious songs during the Civil War. It was first recorded by Fiddlin' John Carson in Atlanta, Georgia in June of 1923. The initial success of this recording made Okeh record producer Ralph Peer aware of the enormous commercial potential of recording and marketing hillbilly records.
In addition to ushering in the era of recorded country music, Little Old Log Cabin In the Lane also has the distinction of being the first country record to be "covered" by another artist. ("Covering" a song is a term used when a record is made to come in on the coattails of a recent hit.) In March of 1924, the blind streetsinger and guitarist Riley Puckett, backed up on fiddle by chicken farmer Gid Tanner, chose Little Old Log Cabin In the Lane for his first recording on Columbia. On the flip side, Puckett recorded Rock All Our Babies To Sleep and became the first to yodel on a phonograph record.

(G) I'm getting old and feeble
I (C) cannot work no (G) more
my rusty bladed hoe I've laid to (D7) rest
and my (G) mama and my papa
they're (C) sleeping side by (G) side
their spirits now are (D7) roaming with the (G) blessed

Oh the (C) chimney's falling down
the (G) roof is tumbled in
letting in the sunshine and the (D7) rain
and the (G) only friend I got now
is this (C) little old dog of (G) mine
and that little old log (D7) cabin in the (G) lane

Well the paths they have growed up
that (C) led us round the (G) hill
The fences have all gone to de (D7) cay
and the (G) creek it has dried up
where we (C) used to go to (G) mill
things have changed their (D7) course in other (G) ways

Oh the (C) chimney's falling down
the (G) roof is tumbled in
letting in the sunshine and the (D7) rain
and the (G) only friend I got now
is this (C) little old dog of (G) mine
and that little old log (D7) cabin in the (G) lane

Well the happiest time for me
was not (C) many years a (G) go
Friends they used to gather round the (D7) door
They would (G) sing and dance at night
while I (C) played the old ban (G) jo
but alas I cannot (D7) play it any (G) more

Oh the (C) chimney's falling down
the (G) roof is tumbled in
letting in the sunshine and the (D7) rain
and the (G) only friend I got now
is this (C) little old dog of (G) mine
and that little old log (D7) cabin in the (G) lane

Well I ain't got long to stay here
and what (C) little time I've (G) got
I'll try to rest content while I re (D7) main
until (G) God shall call this dog and me
to (C) find a better (G) home
than our little old log (D7) cabin in the (G) lane

Oh the (C) chimney's falling down
the (G) roof is tumbled in
letting in the sunshine and the (D7) rain
and the (G) only friend I got now
is this (C) little old dog of (G) mine
and that little old log (D7) cabin in the (G) lane

  • Great song! Well gone! Also thanks for the lyrics and chords. Really helpful to me ...

  • Somewhat different from Ernie Stoneman's great version, but it's a great song! Keep up the good work, Mr. Dite!
