Jeju-do is a semi tropical South Korean island between the mainland and Japan. Women there for thousands of years have dived in the ocean for sea whelks, clams, lobster, abalone. Traditionally only women are allowed to dive and this has been true since the 11th Century. Independent filmmaker, Barbara Hammer, went diving with the women of Jeju-do and recorded their stories of life, hardship, fun and economic survival.
