they use guitars because they can get a bright, loud electric sound with them. guitars are used in all kinds of US and British drone-style rock/postrock, and in African dance music from Afrobeat to soukous to mbaqanga, etc - why shouldn't the Tuareg (Tamashek) use them? enjoy it, this is tops!

Welll, the guitar was NOT invented in Africa. Though the ancestor of the modern day banjo was. However, many African string instruments have a resemblance to the guitar. I believe the guitar is a result of the Arabic Oud
