stopped and shot twice (nine shots fire, one officer,no back up call untill after the shooting) during a routine traffic stop, fleeing the scene after giving an officer my license and charged with Attempted Murder.accused of running over a police office.
A Dothan man has been charged with attempted murder after police say he tried to run over a Dothan police officer with his car, forcing the officer to fire at the suspect, hitting him twice.
Abralem Howard, 32, of Constitution Drive in Dothan, was released from a Dothan hospital Monday afternoon after being treated for injuries he suffered after the officer shot him in the right arm and right leg with his police-issued weapon. He was set to be transferred to the Houston County Jail Monday evening and is being held on a $250,000 bond.
Police say the incident began as a routine traffic stop in the 3000 block of Dawson Street at 1:45 a.m. Monday. Howard, who was driving a black Chevrolet sedan, pulled over in the driveway of a residence, got out of the vehicle and became disorderly. He then ran from the scene and was pursued on foot by the officer.
Police say Howard eluded the officer and was able to return to his vehicle. He then attempted to leave the area by driving through the front yard of the residence as the officer caught up with him. Police say he accelerated into the officer, hitting him in the front leg with the car. The officer fired six rounds at and towards the vehicle, hitting the car several times and hitting Howard twice. Howard continued to flee and escaped. An ambulance was called to the scene and the officer was transported to a local hospital and was treated and released.
Dothan Police Chief John Powell said a preliminary investigation revealed Howard's whereabouts, and he was taken into custody later Monday morning at a residence in Slocomb with the assistance of the Slocomb Police Department and Geneva County Sheriff's Office.
Powell said he is withholding the name of the police officer temporarily to allow time for privacy after the incident. Police procedure calls for any officer involved in firing his weapon to be placed on administrative leave with pay, pending an internal investigation. A separate criminal investigation into the incident is also being conducted to determine if additional criminal charges will be filed against Howard.
"We intend to work with the district attorney in any way we can to see that we get him in jail for as long as we can," Powell said.
Powell declined to discuss Howard's previous criminal history, but court records indicate Howard pleaded guilty to attempted murder in 1998 for a 1997 incident. He also has prior drug-related charges. He was most recently cited March 5 in Dale County for failure to provide proof of insurance.
Powell also said the Alabama Bureau of Investigation has been contacted to provide assistance.
"This incident points out the risk involved in law enforcement just doing their job every day," City Manager Mike West said. "They literally put their life on the line day in and day out to protect the citizens of this city."
