St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols became the fastest in number of seasons to reach the 400 home run plateau when he went deep on Thursday. Pujols hit an opposite-field solo blast to right field to begin the fourth inning of his club's series-opener against Washington Nationals' starter Jordan Zimmermann. It was also his 34th home run of the season, making him the 47th player in baseball history to hit at least 400 homers. The power-hitting native of the Dominican Republic attained the mark during his 10th major- league season, surpassing the record initially set by Alex Rodriguez in his 11th MLB campaign in 2005. Pujols, at 30 years and 222 days old also became the third-youngest player to hit 400. Rodriguez is the youngest, at 29 years, 316 days. Ken Griffey, Jr. ranks second, having attained the feat at 30 years, 141 days of age.
