November 1, 2011--The setting was the Golden Nugget Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas. The event was the International Powerlifting League's World Championships. I weighed in at 213.2 lbs., which is light for me.
I opened with a comfortable weight of 255 kg. (562 lbs.), and it was approved.
For my second attempt, I called for a bar weight of 272.5 kg. (601 lbs.), and announced that I was attempting to set a new World record. I got red-lighted for insufficient depth.
My third attempt, shown here, was a repeat of my second. My handler and friend, Roy Taylor, got inside my head, and helped me visualize the fundamentals of the lift. When I actually got under the bar, I had the confidence to execute the lift successfully. It was approved, and I had my first World record for the day.
