Video of my Coast Guard helo medevac of a 16yr old from a cruise ship 230nm off shore. This video was taken from a C-130 flying cover for us. This is a short clip, but there is no sound.

  • Cruise ships don't go 40 mph. Most top out at 25. Most USN ships won't hit 40.

  • That was 40knts relative. The ship can easily go 25-30 knts plus another 10-15 knts of wind across the bow.

  • Wouldn't it have been easier if the ship had stopped?

  • With the ship movign roughly 40mph and the helicopter maintaining a hover relative to the ship, its the same thing as the helicopter moving at 40mph. With the extra wind across the blades, it requires less power and you have a greater margin of safety.
