Also called the First Gulf War, Desert Storm was an answer to the invasion of Kuwait by Iraqi troops. The United States and a coalition of 31 countries (Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, and Egypt being the largest contributors of forces after the US) joined under the leadership of Norman Schwarzkopf to combat the entrenched Iraquis. The war began with economic sanctions in August of 1990, and escalated to strategic aerial bombardment on January 17, 1991. The ground war began almost a month later, on February 23, and lasted a total of 100 hours, during which the Iraquis were sent reeling back from Kuwait. The early ceasefire is probably what led to the Second Gulf War, in which George W. Bush raised the specter of weapons of mass destruction and sent troops into Iraq to finish what his father had started. Music is "Stronger," sung by Mary J. Blige.
