iPhone OS 3 vs. iOS 4 Speed Test

In this video I compare iPhone OS 3 to iOS 4 in a head to head speed matchup. I loaded a fresh install of iPhone OS 3.1.2 on my iPod touch 2G and then did the same with iOS 4. I ran several tests of the Safari browser that includes repeatedly opening websites over Wi-Fi and filming the results. I then did some general tests of the Maps application including timing the loading time and general speed and responsiveness. Lastly I timed opening up the graphically intense application Real Racing multiple times on both operating systems to see if there was any difference.

Many people have reported that apps seem both faster and slower in some cases on iOS 4 so I decided to do a full test of a few major aspects of the operating systems to try and shed some light on the situation.

@bazil270 I've had people tell me that I should call it both and techincally you can. It was of course called iPhone OS however Apple has renamed all versions to iOS. You can even see it in iTunes, it now calls any iPhone/iPod firmware iOS.

iPhone OS = everything before 4.0

but everything before 4.0, in this case 3, can be also called iOS.

On an Iphone 3G, IOS 3.1.3 is significantly smoother/faster than IOS 4.X.X. I only realised this after downgrading my mum's 3G. However, iOS can be faster for browsing etc. with a 3GS and 4.

actually ios 4 is crap because internet videos wont load fast

many know devices wont have flash and now even h.264 encoded videos too very slow and iphone 4's + ipod touch 4g's wont even load youtube good..

ios 4 + iphone 4/ipod touch 4g = no good experience with videos.

even today i use my ipod touch 2g for videos

but honestly battery on ipod touch 4g very very long lasting
