TxDOT District-wide seal coat contractor, Missouri Petroleum, works on US 79 between Jacksonville and Henderson. The process calls for spraying tacky ashpalt, spreading rock, and rolling the new surface. The application helps extend the life of the highway by keeping the base materials in and the water out.

  • Just so you know...this is called chip sealing. Sealcoating involves different material and is not overladed with aggregate. Then again, I am from Alaska. What do I know.

  • I'm sure it has several names. I've heard it referred to as "chip seal" as well. We just may be using different terms. This is video I shot during an annual program we call "District-wide seal coat." We have another operation here that sounds like what you're describing we call "Fog Seal": All oil, no rock.

  • ACHorton,

I believe your right. In California this is also known as chipseal. Years ago it was called rock and oil. I used to install this in drive-Inn Theaters. We didn"t roll it though. The pea gravelstayed on top. There are many types of products out there to seal asphalt.
