"Bart D. Ehrman is an American New Testament scholar and textual critic of early Christianity.

Ehrman began studying the Bible and its original languages at the Moody Bible Institute and is a 1978 graduate of Wheaton College in Illinois. He received his Ph.D and M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary.

He is the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has written about how the original New Testament texts were frequently altered by scribes for a variety of reasons, and argues that these alterations affect the interpretation of the texts.

Ehrman writes about the early Christians, using the term "proto-orthodox" to describe the Christian traditions that would later be defined as orthodox. He describes first- and second-century Christians as not yet having a unified, orthodox tradition."

  • with all this info im getting so close to saying Fuck God and everything and just not believing and its tearing my world apart i cant focus on life in general or enjoy one second of any day

  • @kidneybog

If you are beginning to recognize that religions and deities are purely human inventions, then you are close to unshackling your mind. For many people that is like the end of an unrequited love affair. They have been *assured* that the other "person" loves them, but there is nobody on the other side of the equation. Realize that and the world will suddenly make complete sense. Good luck.

  • Even if you had the original text, you would not believe there is a God who created this world and will judge it and retribute everyone at the end of the ages. You need to be delivered from your sin.

  • @flypejose

Do you believe in Vishnu? No? I thought not.

  • I don't get it, Muse. Are you telling me I should have doubts about the veracity of the Holy Bible as being the exact, literal word of god?

Can I come shovel snow with you on Friday?

  • // Are you telling me I should have doubts about the veracity of the Holy Bible as being the exact, literal word of god? //

Heck, no! There's a picture of "Him" inspiring it, after all!

I did love the bit about "producing" a Greek manuscript to put words into the other John's mouth.

// Can I come shovel snow with you on Friday? //

You can come and shovel snow *for* me, if you like. I have no intention of shoveling anything! Besides, you'll be too busy eating and drinking ;D

  • @flypejose I think you miss the point entirely. If god has the power to perform all these miracles that defy laws of nature and physics, why wouldn't he do so to preserve his "divine" word from being destroyed or lost from the decay and ravages of time so his word cannot be misinterpreted? Seems pretty important to me to have your followers have a dogma that is directly from you as you had it written down.

  • @kidneybog Dude, when you finally let it go, I can't tell you the amount of peace you will experience

  • Isn't that a hilarious story! Since the passage isn't in the Greek manuscripts (I'm taking his word on this), the story is probably true. Just goes to show that it is not merely modern Xians who fabricate evidence whenever it suits them.

The sidebar links merely look like a lot. The entire lecture is only about 90 minutes. I watched it some time ago and found it so interesting that I read the book. On the other hand, it's not required viewing ;)
