Across the Street, Around the World is an annual celebration of arts, culture and community in Kensington and Chelsea. Spread over three weeks, the festival in 2010 comprised fifteen events specially commissioned by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The programme drew upon the rich artistic, literary, film and musical heritage of West London and celebrated the remarkable cultural diversity of the Royal Borough.
The festival launched with the inaugural October Lecture on Monday, 4 October. Taking centre stage was the world-renowned poet, reggae musician and political activist Linton Kwesi Johnson. Reading from his work across an illustrious 30-year career, Linton Kwesi Johnson celebrated and explored the history of the black community in Kensington and Chelsea before opening up the discussion to the audience. The event was hosted by the festival's writer-in-residence, Jacob Sam-La Rose.
