Violence is one of the foremost reasons behind adult killings in Nairobi's slums. However, the population is spared the worry of emerging lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart ailments, obesity and stress. Gunshot wounds and blunt trauma as a result of 'mob justice' are the most common modes of injury. Reasons being: low levels of education, drug and alcohol abuses, unemployment, poverty, lack of social cohesion and population density.
Indifference of such institutions in slum communities has led to the growth of community informal justice measures, which usually take the form of "mob justice", meted out on people suspected of committing crimes even petty ones.
Slums are notable for as criminal dens where most police shooting take place. Police reports indicate the slums are retreats for robbers, carjackers and other hardened criminals who commit crimes in the affluent parts of the city.
