This man, Graeme Obree, is the total package, an inspiration to those who think they are on the margins and can never compete. He showed that anything is possible given you have enough passion, commitment and drive. What a man. I feel sorry about the troubles he's had in his life, but glad to see he has come out the other side.

I was a boardman fan when I saw him win the olympics in 92,then when I saw this I changed my mind cos he seemed like a smug fuck.I'll be an Obree fan forever.

it's probably just as well for Boardman that Obree didn't get all the access to all the technology etc that Boardman had, because if he had it's obvious he'd have destroyed him every time.

I really hate the way Boardman handled this. He was angry at the governing body for supporting somebody else? Very unsportsmanlike, he should be happy that somebody from Britain had just set the new world record, because obviously if he was a better rider then he was going to beat it anyway, so there was no need to be so damn smug

Just because Boardman took a more scientific and 'professional' approach doesn't mean he is smug. After all, they were huge rivals. Obree's story is all the more remarkable because of how he did it. How great that both heros came from the UK. It might be easier to knock Boardman if he was a frenchie or something. Anyway, Obree for a knighthood.

Just seen the 'Flying Scotsman' and read Obree's story online. Well done Graeme, you are a legend.

@bikeracerguy but Merckx didn't suffer through depression, alcoholism and smoking addiction. and Merckx held the record, and Obree beat it with relative ease. Obviously no offense to a 5 time Tour de France winner.

Boardman does come across as smug twat

I just watched the movie "The Flying Scotsman" on Versus, first time ever hearing of this person Graeme Obree; didn't even know how to spell his name. He's such an inspiration. His story brings to mind a famous quote from Albert Einstein: “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.” Now it's time for me to get moving. I got some riding to do!

In my books Graeme Obree is the best cyclist of all time, in road and track. I just finished reading his book 'The Flying Scotsman' and it made me feel as if i could have the potential to shoot for my dream of a professional cyclist.
Yes I can, what funding are you talking about? The lottery funding that has powered the modern sucess of British Cycling was only made possible by the Olympic gold medal Boardman won in 1992, something that Obree never achieved. Any money Chris Boardman recieved to aid his training came from generous sponsors and not the state as you seem to suggest.

I really dont think there is any need to use language like that, if you dont like someone thats ok but you dont need to broadcast it. Paul
