IRRI ships 35.5 million seeds to Svalbard Global Seed Vault

After months of preparation by staff of the Genetic Resources Center (GRC) at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI; http://www.irri.org ), led by its head Dr. Ruaraidh Sackville Hamilton, a replicate set of the Global Rice Collection from 123 countries held by IRRI left on 21 January for the Svalbard Global Seed Vault or Doomsday Vault. IRRI is contributing the largest number of accessions for a crop (70,180) and the largest estimated number of seeds (35,577,576).

"All involved have shown excellent commitment, making this a very successful project, and I would like to give a very big thank you to everyone who has contributed," said Dr. Sackville Hamilton. The IRRI shipment will be the first to arrive in Oslo, Norway, and the first to be deposited in the vault at Svalbard.

The video shows GRC staff members preparing and loading 99 seed containers into a FedEx truck and the truck's departure.

It's not about being the best accessable, it's about the longevity of the seeds. Cold makes the seed last longer, hence preserving the seeds without the need of electricity. And anyway, if human survive the Ice Age and other catastrophic events in the past, then I hope they could survive and innovative enough to "walk" to North Pole.

Monsanto Corporation, Syngenta Foundation and other chemical industrial complex GMO producers are amongst the investors behind this. Food ownership is the issue here, once GM produce has contaminated every major non GM crop on the planet, and it will happen, too late to stop it, the patent holders will control food production and distribution. The end of bio-diversity is the natural consequence of GM production, hence the Seed Vault, a means to the ownership of all non GM seed also.

We think alike, these changes globally things that have been happening do point to something crucial maybe in the next couple years espcailly I see problems in North Ameria...Goodluck? Been doing my research for 2 years now too, and i'm not quite positive with what i've been gathering lately. I'm not being pessimistic, but i just GUESS 2009 til 2012 are crucial years globally...i hope i'm so wrong with all my assumptions...Goodluck, should i say...to all of us

It's important to just relize what is going on, and take notes on what is happening like this seed vualt, there are many major things happening worldwide that I have my eye on, No one knows what will happen in 2012, but the government and world elite have a choice to twist the finianctial system and maybe make 2012 seem worse than it is, than just do what they plan..All these things worldwide just don't happen for a reason just keep your eyes open me and a friend have been watchingformajorevents
