As for Scotch, I had the same experience with late 1970s era Scotch Betamax cassettes. Their tape was pretty sticky and would have problems playing. I never want to run the 1970s Scotch cassettes I have in my SL-HF750.
I even have an old Scotch cassette that used brown oxide tape; it's totally unusable.
But, Scotch seemed to have fixed their problems starting in the early 80s.
Scotch tape from the 80s and up have been some of the very best and most stable tapes I have ever used.

@eyeh8cbs "I've heard the worst was Scotch, though I don't think BASF Beta tapes came out as early. I've got a few Scotch tapes from 1978 that have 'sticky shed syndrome', when you play them the supply reel doesn't want to turn"
3 years old, but I thought I'd share my 2 cents.
I agree with Mr. Glasser about BASF being the worst for Beta. Same experience; their tape just simply wasn't very stable up until the late 1980s. Sticky and prone to shedding.

Is it live, or is it BASF? LOL

Awesome ad! Is it just me or do BASF tapes record odd fleshtone colours? They always seem yellowy on my tapes, does not happen on any other brand.
