Hour 1 of the 4 hour restored version of 1924's Greed. Three lives are destroyed by the greed that consumes them after receiving a sudden fortune won in the lottery.
Frankly, only a crazy movie, and I am one , to endure four hours of this project megalomaniacal director Erich von Stroheim. Legendary producer Irving Thalberg did well to reduce the copy sent to only two hours. Some wonderful scenes and disturbing, others less so. The absence of light is one of the downsides of the filme. Raimundo Balby(Penalva-Maranhão-Brazil)
One of the greatest quotes from any director came from Eric Von Stroheim after seeing the viciously cut version of his movie that was released by the studio. Stroheim said, “The man who cut my movie had nothing on his mind but a hat!” MGM studios actually had all the cut footage in storage until the middle of the 1950’s when some genius decided they wanted to use the storage for something else...so they burnt it all. Who knows what else was lost in that blaze.
i thumbed down because of the ad.
