Ashura is the remembrance and commemoration of the Grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In the 10 days which many Muslims, mainly Shias and some followers of the Sunni group remember the sacrifice of Imam al-Hussain (pbuh) for the sake of preserving Islam from near extinction. Most people mistaken it as a mourning strictly for Imam al-Husayn's martyrdom, but in essence it is commemorating his stance against oppression, dictatorship and ungodly rulers who usurp roles of authority for the sake of their materialistic and egotistical wants.

It is remembering the need to always stand up against oppression, never stay quiet when there is a group of people being oppressed, and remembering that a Godly man, whom the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said - "Hussain is from me, and I am from Husayn, whoever loves Husayn, loves me, and whoever angers Husayn, angers me"

We are witnesses to an age where rulers the world over have taken the throne of government, and also clergymen who claim to be doing the people good but have done nothing but oppress. They claim legitimacy, but are nothing but cowardly dictators.

Imam Hussayn (pbuh) is our example to resist such governments and religious leaders, and to stand up when everyone else sits down.

did rasulallah (saw) instruct you to breathe? You have a pointless argument. In terms of chestbeating it is in order to commemorate the pain Imam Hussayn (as) felt. The act itself has great bounty in the eyes of allah (swt). In bringing you closer to allah(swt), by commemorating such a figure through this act, you adhere to the principles Imam Hussayn (as) upheld who, as ur sunni books narrate aisha has said "was the epitome of muslim ahlak (mannerisms).

  • jio matami

    maula salamat rakhay

  • My brothers, Did Rasulallah instruct us to beat our chest? He is our guide, the mercy for mankind, i am sure no shia would disagree with this, so why beat our chest? It is pointless. It does not increase your iman? or bring you closer to Allah swt.
