LODI, N.J. - Lodi 9-1-1 received a call reporting a fire at 260 Grove St. on October 22, dispatching the Lodi Fire Dept. Police arrived on scene and informed headquarters that they had a working fire. When 2nd Asst. Chief Baldino arrived on the scene, he requested that headquarters put this in as a full assignment, and as companies called in service notify them of the heavy fire on the C- and D-side of a 1.5-story wood-frame. Command directed the first-due engine to take a hydrant and to stretch a in line to the front door and two lines to the rear. The truck company was ordered to ladder the building and to vent the roof. Command then requested a second alarm, a FAST assignment from Wallington, a truck from both Garfield and Wallington, and a rescue from Saddle Brook. Other mutual aid towns were requested to cover the now empty Lodi firehouses . As crews entered the first floor they were faced with a heavy volume of fire and were able to contain it, but the fire had already extended to the attic and the chief notified them to back the lines out for fear of collapse. The roof crew was ordered off the roof and to engage in exterior fire suppression operations. It took about 90 minutes to gain control over the fire; but not before one firefighter suffered second degree burns, sending him to the hospital. Additionally, one resident succumbed to smoke inhalation and was also sent to the hospital. Both were later released. The remaining five residents escaped safely. The fire is being investigated by the Lodi Fire Marshal.
