❧ lyrics & information from http://www.amagpiesnest.com/
❧ From the The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Complete Recordings: Retreat, composed by Howard Shore

the song is called Namarië, solo sung by Elizabeth Fraser, chorus sung by The London Voices.
lyrics in Quenya with translation:

Ai! Laurië lantar lassi súrinen,
yéni únótimë ve rámar aldaron!
Yéni ve lintë yuldar avánier
mi oromardi lissë-miruvóreva
Andúnë pella, Vardo tellumar
nu luini yassen tintilar i eleni
ómaryo airetári-lírinen.

Sí man i yulma nin enquantuva?

An sí Tintallë Varda Oiolossëo
ve fanyar máryat Elentári ortanë
ar ilyë tier undulávë lumbulë
ar sindanóriello caita mornië
i falmalinnar imbë met,
ar hísië untúpa Calaciryo míri oialë.
Sí vanwa ná, Rómello vanwa, Valimar!
Namárië! Nai hiruvalyë Valimar!
Nai elyë hiruva! Namárië!

Tolkien's translation (not literal)

Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind,
long years numberless as the wings of trees!
The long years have passed like swift draughts
of the sweet mead in lofty halls
beyond the West, beneath the blue vaults of Varda
wherein the stars tremble
in the voice of her song, holy and queenly.
Who now shall refill the cup for me?

For now the Kindler, Varda, the Queen of the stars,
from Mount Everwhite has uplifted her hands like clouds
and all paths are drowned deep in shadow;
and out of a grey country darkness lies
on the foaming waves between us,
and mist covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever.
Now lost, lost to those of the East is Valimar!
Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar!
Maybe even thou shalt find it! Farewell!

  • From everything I've ever heard or read the songwriters were really close to Tolkien's pronunciations. Maybe there are minor mis pronunciations of vowels here or there in some songs, but I think that could also count as a difference in accent when speaking whichever elvish dialect, maybe even the singer's natural accent coming out. I don't want to get heat for this, I'm just going off what I've learned on a personal basis while studying Tolkien on my own time :)

  • @gwyndolynelizabeth /watch?v=6de_SbVUVfA caita is clearly pronounced different here. most parts of the language are pronounced like in german. for example the different "ch" parts, or how the e and a sounds... And I would pronouce the lyrics very often.. very different ;)

  • @PeepMeowMusic I did originally think something about Caita sounded off, but mainly because of the vowel sound. But then, the dipthong ai is pronounced with emphasis on the first vowel, so I guess what I'm hearing is maybe the singer's accent?? I think she has one if it's who I think it is... lol can't remember her name!

  • @gwyndolynelizabeth Elizabeth Fraser ;)

  • Thank God no haters! :)))

  • @TheTwilightUnicorn oh i know i've read and own all three books. :) but still it's sad peter jackson kills him.

  • @KittyKatHill Well, if my memory still serves me well, Haldir didn't die in the book version of "Lord of the Rings", but was very much alive instead, even in the last stages of the story. And I also seem to remember that the Elves never went to defend the Helm's Deep.

  • @TheMrMilla thx :)

  • he didn't have to die :'(

  • We will miss u haldir, may you go to the undying lands (heaven). Rest in peace.

  • @PeepMeowMusic YES. thank you lol She has such a lovely voice X)

  • @PeepMeowMusic well that's cool. From everything I've read pronunciation is based off scandanavian languages, and going off that knowledge these lyrics aren't that off. But, again, I'm going off my own knowledge of Tolkien's languages :)
