A response to a YouTube commentary on charges of racism in Avatar

I give what I feel is an incisive and piercing refutation of the original post's indignation.

I suggest you watch the original video here for context:

  • I think people say racism because they just cant sit down and enjoy the movie. Also I think you using your intellect to outwit a teenage girl who was just doing a project for school is just not really needed. She is against Racism isnt that enough? She is outraged that people like you who were never slaves in your entire lives must live in the past and constantly blame people who have never owned a slave.

Jake oozes US Marine pride! He improvised, adapted and overcame the Toruk. The natives didn't study it, they had semi-deified it. He wasn't better because of being white, but because of being part of a more advanced civilization.

You should also not forget that a native Toruk rider had existed.

Many attitudes are grouped under "racist": chauvinism, bigotry, misanthropy -- and they apply to all races.

Nature is racist; society can rise above it. We're different but equal.

    Peace.

  • I'm sorry for not watching the whole video man, but I got tired.

People can be bigots and chauvinists and whatnot, but think a bit about what you're saying.

The Na'vi are a mockature of the "native" archetype (regardless of race). The guy didn't treat them as objects, he treated them as less technologically advanced people. The tiny chauvinist in me wants to say, "He acted like a typical American, not a typical white" (does such a person exist?).
