It was quite a soggy afternoon in the Auburn, Opelika area when Elliott and I decided we needed to get out of the house for a bit and grab a bite to eat. I made my normal circuit and as I was about to head home I heard Q609 chime in on the scanner. With the rain falling like it was I decided to gain us a bit of shelter under one of the bridges in downtown Opelika. I set the tripod low and close, turned the camera on and headed back to the Jeep to fetch the little one so we could get an up close and personal look at the train as it made its way by. we did the normal wave, point and gasp as the locomotives passed and watched as the rest of the consist came by. Just about the time I was taking him back to the car seat I spotted something I haven't seen in quite a long time. The train had a Mammoet caboose on the tail end of the train. I don't know much about the company other than they specialize in heavy lifting and transportation. Either way it was a pleasant surprise to see something from a bygone era.

Enjoy!

  • That is so awesome. I didn't know CSX put the caboose at the end of the train. I didn't know they still do that.

  • They don't.

I'm sure this was just being transported from one location to another via CSX and someone found it fitting to place it on the rear of the train instead of being stuck somewhere within the consist.

  • Wait... is that a NS caboose? Awesome catch no matter what! Nice!

  • Nope, it was a Mammoet caboose.
