Inspired by Kalam, kids brighten up schools

Warangal, March 20: Inspired by the message of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, students of six village schools of this district have contributed Re 1 each to whitewash and brighten up their school buildings. It was the students of government schools in Munagalaveedu, Tammadapally, Teegarajupally, Lohita, Anantaram, and Nallabelli villages who set an example for their urban cousins and did their parents and teachers proud.

"Though they saved and contributed only small amounts, the result was big and visible," says Mr S. Krishna Rao, parent of a student at Anantaram village in Parvatagiri mandal.Impressed by the initiative shown by their children, the parents too contributed their mite. Some of the children persuaded their parents to contribute to the whitewashing. "This is a small but impressive initiative," says another parent Mr V. Ramanaiah of Anantaram village. "This will go a long way to help maintain the buildings," he says.

It all began when the Vandemataram Foundation, which is promoting patriotism among students using the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and Dr Kalam, motivated the students to do their bit to keep their schools clean. "I was inspired by the President Kalam's exhortation to children to dream big and work hard," says T. Ravinder Rao, one of the volunteers of the foundation. "I am just taking the message to rural students and they are working wonders."The foundation is also procuring blackboards and constructing toilets in schools with the help of students and their parents in order to promote community ownership of educational institutions. A total of 250 volunteers of the foundation have joined hands and have adopted selected schools in 14 mandals of the district.

A standing ovation for over five minutes - that's how the audience in the jam-packed Ravindra Bharathi responded after Kargil heroes Paramveerchakra Grenadier Yogender Yadav (who was pumped 18 bullets all over the body) and Sanjay Kapoor narrated blow by blow their battle against Pakistani soldiers and then against injury and death in their triumphant saga. The heroes participated in the Shaheed Bhagat Singh's birth centenary celebrations organised by Vandemataram Foundation and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Seva Samiti here on Sunday morning.

There was a palpable surge in the patriotic spirit among the members of the audience who heard the heroes in rapt attention. The spirits further rose with little Jhansi Ranis, Subhash Chandra Boses and Bhagat Singhs rallying on the stage raising slogans Vandemataram, Bharatmata ki Jai, Inquilab zindabad and students performing kits and dance programmes.

Virendra Sindhu, daughter of Bhagat Singh's younger brother Kultar Singh, who was present along with her husband Naresh Arora, said, "Though 60 years have passed since Independence, most of the Indians lack basic facilities like food, shelter and clothing and there is no better way of paying tributes to Shaheed Bhagat Singh than working towards achieving these goals."Sindhu was born nine years after the execution of Bhagat Singh in 1931 and married Naresh Arora in 1968 after which they settled in London. She wrote books like Patra aur Dastavez and Mere Kranthikari Sathi.

"We are not staying there to make a living but to make a mark as Indians," says Naresh Arora, a former BBC journalist, who authored six books with his pen name Naresh Bharathi (Bharathi signifies his love for his motherland).A sword belonging to Uyyalavada Veera Narasimha Reddy ( which butchered about 575 British soldiers in 1847) was displayed marking 160 years of his exploits."Despite being the foremost in launching attack against the British in Kurnool region, Veera Narasimha Reddy couldn't find a place in history," rues founder director of Vandematram Foundation Ravindra.

The participants also went through an exhibition on the important events in the life of Bhagat Singh and checked out book stalls at the entrance of the venue.Parents of departed heroes of Kargil war Raja Reddy and Padmapani Acharya were among those present.
