Over the past ten years, Laurie has received thousands and thousands of emails and letters from readers about how Speak has given them the courage to speak up. The first stanza of the poem and the last are Lauries words. Everything in the middle, all of the stanzas that start with the word YOU are words and phrases from letters that were sent to the author.

Laurie Halse Anderson (www.writerlady.com) is the author of the genre defining YA novel Speak. Speak was a National Book Award Finalist, a Michael L. Printz Award Honor Book for excellence in young adult literature, and was named a best book of the year by Publishers Weekly, Booklist, School Library Journal and Horn Book.

  • Wow. Just wow. I love how much this book has meant to people. Stories like this need to be told. This is the proof.

  • Dear Mrs. Anderson,

    I want my diary back.

    Sincerely,

    Anorexic girl with social anxieties

  • i just finished this book and iv herd about stories simalire and i realy like her books right now im reading twisted its kinda the same but i really love her righting do any of you know if she has a youtube account

  • In the book, Melinda is described as having auburn hair, black eyebrows, and muddy brown eyes, Laurie fits all of these characteristics. She is more than just an author of teen's tales in highschool, she describes pain like no other can. The one and only kind of pain that silents you, humiliates you, and never leaves you alone. I was raped by my best friend when I was 13 for a long time I didn't have a voice, this book has given me my voice. You are my hero Laurie.
