International Fund for Animal Welfare seal program director Sheryl Fink reports from the air on the unfortunate and cruel hunting practices she witnessed on day three of the Canadian commercial seal hunt off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.
@BulgarianInCanada NLers have been under a cod moratorium for over 15 yrs - the seal pop has grown considerably (around 2-4 million in the 70s - 8-10 million in 2010) and yet the cod stocks are not yet fully recovered. If NLers are not threatening the cod the seals aren't helping them. The whole eco-system could be out of whack because there's too many seals. With low catch rates the last couple yrs not enough are being killed to sustain them and their habitats.
@Ersabette thats true they do eat smaller fish and YOUNG cod predator fish but the fact is the whole eco system is now f**ked up. Where are the Grand Banks? we are destroying this planet at an alarming pace and enough is enough.
@BulgarianInCanada Believe what you like, doesn't make it any less true. Yes, there is less ice, seals were pupping closer to and on shore this year. More slaughters? You just said this year only 30,000 were killed which is less than last year, not more. Less food? Apparently I've heard from your side that seals eat 90% of cod predators which means that there should be a plethora of food out there. I wish you ARA's would get your stories straight.
@Ersabette i dont believe those surveys. from what i see there is less and less ice out there which means less time and places for seals to stay at. i just dont see how seal populations could be booming with less food, more slaughters, and less ice! I'd say those surveys are faked just so people get misleaded into thinking its all ok. Just like the cod? remember...
@BulgarianInCanada You mean the industry is dying. The seal hunt will continue regardless of an industry to manage their numbers. A 2010 survey places them at 8-10million, they are increasing despite an annual hunt that removes 3-6% of their pop. Left to grow too much and they will die a slow, painful death by starvation and/or disease - that's what you're fighting for. I noticed you have avoided my questions, don't worry, I figured you would.
@BulgarianInCanada Hope you like cod, cos there won't be much of that when seal hunting stops
