Tegan and Sara interview - Reuters [27 July, 2007]
Canadian indie-pop singers Tegan and Sara talk about their fifth studio album "The Con."
Sara: "And their whole thing was like, 'We're not going to give you a lot of money, we're not going to make you big superstars, like, you need to, you need to organically grow your talent. You need to, you need to make connections one-on-one with people, and you need to, you need to understand your instrument, and your songwriting and yourselves, and ultimately that will make you important, that will make you important songwriters."
Tegan: "It's such an intense thing, like when I finally write the song and get a basic idea and I'm ready to record it, it's like I go into this crazy place where I'm just frantically layering everything, and more vocals, more guitars, more piano, more keyboards, now I wanna lay down drums, and then a bass track, and then I just create an MP3 and send it to Sara and go to bed."
Sara: "But I think that the great thing about, um, what Tegan and I can do in our band, is that we love to duplicate our voices. Like when I'm recording at home, and I'm making demos and that sort of thing, I never just record like one vocal. Like I love, I love kind of like having different harmonies and different interlocking parts, and I also like to just double or triple things, just to give it a different sound, and we sort of have that natural- we sound like each other, but we have a different way of singing."
Sara: "I really love being able to go back and forth between what I see as like the real world and my world, like I, I like that. I mean there's pros and cons to both. I mean Tegan's talking about being able to get on stage every night, and the privilege of having people pay to come and see you. I mean the whole idea of it is sort of mind boggling when you really think about it. And, it's wonderful. And there's about 22 and a half hours that you deal with every day, even when you are on the road that involve nothing like that."
Tegan: "You negotiate this sort of like path that you fall in love over and it's a bit of a con, because in the end, you know, you're just you, and like it all comes down, all the walls come down and you just end up being yourself and they end up being themselves and that's the con."
