Ingredients:
1/2 cup toor dal/arhar dal
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon turmeric (haldi)

For Seasoning
2 tablespoons oil
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
1/8 teaspoon fenugreek seed (methi)
1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds (rai)
Pinch of asafetida (hing)
10-12 curry leaves
4 dry whole red chilies
1 large tomato cubed in small pieces
Approx. 1-1/2 cup mixed vegetables cubed in bite size (green beans, carrot, Zucchini, radish)
2 tablespoons tamarind pulp
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sambar powder, available in any Indian grocery store

  • Well, I don't have a pressure cooker. Can I still cook the lentils in a regular pot? How long will it take?

  • is samber masala important can v usse garam masala as a subsitutue

  • Manjula, you have the best Indian recipes! I lost my South Indian cookbook with an excellent sambar recipe and was surprised that I couldn't find a good one anywhere on the net. Then I thought maybe you'd have one and sure enough this is EXACTLY like the one in the cookbook. Thanks so much!

  • @123sanjita Yes.. But it depends on your taste. Toor dhal gives a better aroma for me.. But moong dhal sambhar is literally the same..
