April 1982. Famed Carlsbad Raceway in southern California. It had rained all week, but on Sunday, the locals came out to give it a try - about a dozen brave souls! The track was horrific - Carlsbad's clay surface gets very slippery when you add water. All sizes and skill levels in one class - which no one won, because no one finished!

  • Thanks for the messages! It certainly was fun to watch and videotape!

I imagine it was hard to ride in, especially for SoCal riders ... it was hard to just walk!

    Thanks again!

  • To all the gentleman from other countries saying the Americans can not ride in the mud. I believe you should type in the search, 1987 Motocross Des Nations. Nuff said.

  • thats an average irish track on a race day :)

  • Keep in mind, I'm 56. A couple of months ago, 4 of us were up at Gorman, CA after it rained. we hit this area that was just slick, shallow mud. tires gripping nothing, front tire in one groove, back tire in another. Laughing my as off! everyone looking back at one another. That's part of what it's all about, isn't it?

  • I wonder if you need a whole bike to race. What I mean is suppose I just had a grip in each hand and stuck numbers on the side of my head. I think I could have won running around the track instead. I could even make 2 stroke bike noises as I go. waaaawaaaa

  • this brings back memories... i never rode at Carlsbad, this reminds me of sadle back a little though ....

  • Ah, isn't that just lovely? All the bikes are 2 strokes. I wish it would be like that these days as well

  • @yam187yam It get you really really close to the wet black top.. Have been there a few times myself.. Haha. Fun but painful at times..

  • I am brittish and i would love to ride in that right now, looks like great muddy fun. Shame it's just like a normal brittish race though

  • I was there on that day and it was maybe october or november of 1982. Like the other guys have said, there are some 1983 bikes in the video. When Carlsbad was this muddy, it was like riding on mud over the top of ice. ZERO traction. Its funny how some of the comments say that the tires were not as good back then so thats why they can't make it through or that the riders suck. Not the case, at all. Pick your best new tire and go ride on wet blacktop and see where it gets ya!

  • Did a 5 hour enduro that was like this........never EVER again!

  • Bet y'all they were on intermediates, as that was the choice tire for Carlsbad.

Regardless, mud tires back then were nowhere as good as what we have today.
