I discourage anyone from ever joining the National Guard. If you can land a full time position with the Guard or become a pilot through the reserves, then fine, do that. Otherwise, they just use your body and you get no benefit from it. They promise you a lot, and deliver little. And it really interferes with your civilian life.
Being in the Guard makes it difficult to land a civilian position. Whatever beneifts they say they give you toward education you can get through the lottery, TSAC, PEALE, etc. Guard education benefits are taxable, and knock you out of the free funds you'd get anyway. Don't waste your life with this.
People like Col. Patty Jones say it's great because she has always been full time and draws a fat check with benefits, and, honestly, in the regular service she'd never get past O4. Recruiters love it because they get all the benefits, generally make their own hours and go home every night.
Pilots love it because they get to fly and get all the free training. Most soldiers just show up, stand in line, and clean equipment. It is really boring. The best reason to stay clear of the National Guard and Reserves is they own you. You miss a drill and they send the cops after you.
My greatest shame in my life is that I was, at a moment in my life, so stupid as to waste several years of my life with the Guard when I could have gone to university and attended ROTC and became a pilot which was my dream. (I got suckered into the Guard believing I could do all that without ROTC.)
Instead I got suckered into the Guard and had to serve with morons like Tommy Rice and Charles Taylor and Sam Shoulders. Had my time wasted until I was too old to become a pilot. I still have nightmares sometimes that I am enlisted in the National Guard.
