The daughter of Prince Su, born Aisin-Gioro Xianyu, better known as Eastern Jewel, she was sent to Japan and raised by Kawashima Naniwa. Known in Japan as Kawashima Yoshiko, after being abused by her adopted father she began to dress in male attire. Briefly married to a Mongol prince she ran away and became a spy for the Japanese in Shanghai. Later, she used her place in the Qing dynasty to persuade her cousin, the last Emperor, to go to Manchuria to lead a new government. She served in the military of Manchukuo as commander of the Anguo Army. After being wounded she went back to espionage in Tianjin. However, she became too famous to be an effective spy, known as the "Eastern Mata Hari" and the "Joan of Arc of Manchuria". After the defeat of Japan she was captured by the Kuomintang and executed in 1948.

  • Nice video, a fascinating woman. The history of Manchukuo and the Fengtian clique are really rather interesting.

  • Thanks. She had spunk, she had drive and determination. Despite all the circumstances there was a great vision at work and that is what attracts me to the story.

  • Wowww I never knew she was from the Aisin Gioro bloodline !!

  • Eastern Jewel was well ahead of her time by dressing as a man. Those clothes fitted her well. I get the impression that there she appears in more movies than "The Last Emperor" by Bertolucci. Would it be possible to get some movie titles? I can get hold of Chinese and Japanese movies through a few Chinese friends.

  • Very nice pictures! Well done! She was a truly remarkable woman because she refused to let anyone else drive her fate, she was the one that made her own destiny.

  • Where did you get all the awesome photos from ?

I searched the whole internet for good photos but never found anything THAT good.

    Nice work.

  • Very nice, actually, compliments...I'm looking for historical reaserching about her, could you tell me something about? Books, newspapers, photos, videos etc.... I know that she recorded a disc (a vinyl). Thank you so much.
