Elfenlied - H. Wolf

Elfenlied is about a tiny elf in an enchanted forest. The word "elfe" has a double meaning: Elf and Eleven, which confuses the elf in the story. The night watchman calls "eleven!" and the elf awakens from his slumber thinking he has been summoned. He stumbles sleepily toward the village wall that is covered in glow worms which he mistakes for lighted windows. Thinking that there is a wedding taking place, he tries to look into the "window" and bumps his head against the wall. The narrator then mocks the elf with cries of "cuckoo!".
