So I have just started my first raised garden here in Washington State. I am bringin in the new topsoil next week to add to the exisiting, that has never been farmed. What nutrients and in what form, other than manure, would you add? Also, did you take out all of the old grass and discard it or did you blend it into the soil?

Great work! Please keep the updates coming. :D

that sounds like a good idea, but I still am a little old school, I follow the philosophy of, "The farms best fertilizer is it's farmer's footsteps." But, I don't take it too literally, hah.

A good way to avoid compacting the soil, is to find some old boards (free) and lay them down and use them as your footpaths in the garden. The boards will distribute your weight evenly, and not compact the soil too much.

It REALLY cuts down on the amount of watering I have to do, and there's no problem with weeds. I use a lawnmower bag to catch my grass clippings and shred the leaves in the fall and use that as mulch. During the summer I keep the clippings in a big pile and remulch with them every year.

Looks great! I live in the desert part of Washington state, we get 13 inches or less of rainfall a year. What I do is exactly what you have done so far, clear the weeds/grass, and then I double dig the earth, amend the soil. The I collect as much cardboard as I can, I lay it over the entire patch and water it well, then I cover it all with mulch. when I want to plant, I simply scoop the mulch aside, cut an X in the wet cardboard and pop my plants in, put the mulch back around the plants.
