  • There is A LOT you can do to help this condition. Specific exercises, counter-irritant injections, and yes surgery. There is a newer surgical procedure that does NOT involve severing the ligament. It is called medial patellar ligament splitting, and was developed by Dr. Aziz Tnibar, currently at the University of Copenhagen. It is minimally invasive and very successful. Excellent article on this condition on this blog: TheEquinist.blogspot.com

  • In many cases a 2° or 3° wedge shoe will take care of the problem, but as I say, first I would rule out a few other things.. Farrier Ray, TX, OK

  • @yoyopron nothing really a vet can do but put the horse down. doesnt seem to be in pain and 90% of the time they arent, just one of those things. There are countless stories and comments (on here & in vet journals) about their own/client horses having it. Alot of the time they just need some exercies to help stretch it out everyday maybe some supplements and it starts to fade and flex a whole lot better :)

  • my new pony that used to have it is completely free of it now. she just starteed doing it in the frist 2weeks of owning her. all i did was exercise her everyday on the roads for about 1-2hours and did schooling for 3hours each week , getting her in an outline, after that she stopped it completely.

  • Call a vet. If you can afford to own a horse, you can afford to get her the help she needs.

  • i put a comment on her over a year ago about my mare having it. Shes now almost 5 and apart from the odd drop of her behind you would never know she had it, I never had the op as i was told she would never be able to sleep standing up, among others. I used a suplerment called supper flex made by naff. I swear by the stuff. I am a big naff fan and use loads of there stuff. She has 6 scoops if its cold wet or snowing in winter but has 3-4 if its dry. Shes so much better on this stuff. Good luck

  • loss of muscle tone, lack of fitness, lack of minerals (especially selenium) and her toes are too long. You're in the UK, there's a lot of rain and it washes all the minerals out of the soil. get her a mineral block, or a mineral supplement and lots of exercise. if you have her on a halter, try to get her to step backward out of the lock as opposed to forcing through it.

  • hi,

i have just bought a horse and tyhe day after wre got her she has got the upward fixation of the patella. It is getting worse quickly. any ideas how to make her get better and why it came on so quickly?>

    thanks

  • I have a 2 yr old Mustang filly with this she did not develope this until she got a bad case of blood worms lost a nd serious amount of weight. She does not do this all the time. she is getting better. I talked to the vet today and he said an injection of iodine usually does the trick so I am waiting to get the money and go to the vet and have this done.

  • A degree or wedge shoe will help position the tendons enabling them to function correctly, to have a vet cut the tendon is just not, and shouldn't be your first option, first look at the horse, conformation, condition, muscle around the stifle area etc ... if you know the horse has been neglected and possible in poor condition, then your first step should be to condition and try and build on the muscle, there are just so many different things to try first...
