They are considered one of the most dangerous places around the city of Nairobi. Several people have been killed around the area, the latest victim Martin Njuma, a pilot with the national carrier Kenya Airways was killed last week by robbers after his car stalled near one of the tunnels. The drainage tunnels that run from Uhuru park all the way to Bunyala roundabout are generally considered no go zones after night fall. Robert Nagila visited one of the dangerous Uhuru park tunnels, but not without the escort of armed policemen.

  • You obviously missed my point ceteris. I was not implying that poverty causes crime. And I do in fact agree with you that the biggest thieves in Africa are the ruling elites. I was comparing the crime Kenya to other much poorer countries in Africa to show the point that saying poverty is the cause of crime in Kenya is stupid. Other poorer countries have lower crime rates. I wanted to say that the big difference btwn rich & poor in Kenya could be encouraging crime by the 'dispossesed' poor. Ok?

  • @Julianbts

Crime has nothing to do with litracy. I know people who have no education but have values they treasure...they will not kill or steal.

The intelligentsia and ruling Elites in Africa are well known for stealing ,killing for money and power.

  • the only reason you and i are not stealing (Blue collar crime) is because you can read, write and have a basic education to survive in this world. If Kenya made education until high school mandatory like they do in the US and give loans for people to go college. Crime rate will drop. That i can bet my life on it. We choose useless leaders in Kenya bcoz the voters are uneducated, poor. It's easier to take advantage of an illiterate person coz of ignorance

  • @julianbts.... have you ever been to tanzania? i have and Tanzanian call Kenyans wahuni...they view us the same we view Nigerians.

South Africa has high crime bcoz the white denied those blacks education. Those blacks had babies, then grandbabies. No education thus the only jobs they can do is labour which is not = to their population so they steal, and rape. Illegal, uneducated Mexicans cross to come to the US in droves

  • There is definitely something going on in places like Kenya, S.Africa, Mexico etc and that is a vast disparity btwn rich and poor, coupled with a relatively large segment of the population that is illiterate. This, and the high rates of corruption in the elected officials and importantly, the police is what in my view is the cause of the spike in crime. I am pretty sure Kenya is well off than many other countries both in GDP & literacy but yet compared to them, our crime rates are very worrying.

  • I get ur point with illiteracy and the correlation to crime rates but still the staggering crime in places like S.Africa and Mexico or some parts of Kenya is more complex than you want to convince us. Did you know Mexico's economy is about 10th largest worldwide? How do you explain the relatively low crime rates in some very impoverished African countries with a very high number of "illiterate" citizens. Tanzania is less developed than Kenya but with a crime rate that is very low compared to us.

  • want to remain sad?

    don't see this:

    watch?v=sKrai1dQmgw

  • True, i also think that they should invest in surveillance equipment(cameras) on hot spots and establish a Rapid Response Highway Unit incase one is in trouble.

  • Marto... knew you when you were growing up and still a great guy.... R. I. P. ....and let us all team up and take our Kenya back from the hands of crime.

  • @Julianbts...how can you stop crime in a country where unemployment rate is 60%. these guys will steal and kill for food, money. ILLETERACY=UNEMLOYMENT=POVERTY=CRIME. Rich, developed countries have a high literacy rate while poor countries like Kenya and their African counterparts have high levels of illeteracy. IT's simple common sense. The more educated you are the better the leaders you will choose. ILLITERACY=POVERTY= HIGH CRIME ask southafricans, colombians, mexicans, kenyans..etc
