Aber grundsaetzlich funktioniert das so: durch Treibstrahlduesen in den Waenden wird im Sinne einer Drehbewegung Luft eingeblasen. Gleichzeitig bildet ein Abluftventilator in der Decke einen Sog. Im Zusammenspiel entsteht ein Unterdruck und damit ein Sturmauge und eben die Windhose darum herum, die die Rauchpartikel einsammelt.

@TheLegoMaxter: Ja, ich war dabei, natürlich nicht im Sturmauge. Aber auch von der Seite fühlt man den Luftstrom. Am 04.08. kannst du ihn übrigens live erleben (öffentliche Tornadovorführung).

The artificial tornado was not installed for fun!!! In Germany the regulations require a smoke removal system for the case of fire for a building of this size. At the end the the ingenious idea of an artificial tornado replacing a conventional smoke removal systems was the cheapest solution. Because of the complex and unique structure of the building it would have been much more complicated and expensive to do it another way.

After having buildt the museum, which is a pretty cool building, fire inspectors demanded a number of firedoors. The museum ppl didn't like that one bit, as it would somewhat ruin the appearence of the building. So to avoid it doors, they came up with this as a solution removing smoke in case of fire.

It takes about 7 min to fire up, and uses 144 jets and 28 tons of air.
