Trịnh Công Sơn was a legendary Vietnamese music composer who has produced more than 500 songs during the 1960s and 1970s. His romantic pieces are wellknowned by Vietnamese around the globe. Some of his popular songs have been translated into English, French and Japanese.

"Biển Nhớ" tells the story that commonly shared with many Vietnamese boat people that fled their beloved homeland following the end of the Vietnam War. They left behind their loved ones and went to the sea with uncertainness, risking their lives for the unknown, in search for freedom and a better life.

While staying at the refugee camp in the summer of 1979 in Indonesia, I listened to "Biển Nhớ" song by the popular Vietnamese singer, Khánh Ly, over and over on the small cassette tape player that belonged to the boat owner, Mr. Đồng Tôn.

Trịnh Công Sơn là một nhạc sĩ huyền thoại. Ông ta đã viết hơn 500 bài hát trong thập niên 1960 và 1970. Âm nhạc của ông vẫn còn rất phổ biến trong tất cả thế hệ người Việt Nam trên khắp hòn cầu. Bài hát của ông đã được dịch sang tiếng Anh, tiếng Nhật và tiếng Pháp.

"Biển Nhớ" là một trong nhiều bài hát bất hủ của tác giã Trịnh Công Sơn. Đây là bài hát mà tôi đã yêu trong suốt cuộc hành trình vượt biển của tôi trong năm 1979.

Bài hát "Biển Nhớ" nói về hoàn cảnh đau buồn của nhiều thuyền nhân Việt, những người đã bỏ chạy khỏi quê hương yêu dấu của mình, sau khi kết thúc chiến tranh Việt Nam. Họ bỏ lại người thân và quê hương, ra biển khơi bất chấp hiểm nguy, để hy vọng tìm được tự do và một cuộc sống tốt hơn.

Trong khi ở tại trại tị nạn ở Indonesia, tôi nghe bài hát này do ca sĩ Việt Nam nổi tiếng, Khánh Ly, rất nhiều lần trên máy nghe băng cassette nhỏ của chủ tàu, ông Đồng Tôn.
