I discovered this rag on YouTube when composer Natalia Myślewicz posted herself playing this ragtime tune she had improvised. The video was titled then just "Ragtime" which is how it caught my attention. I liked the rag so much that, with Natalia's help, I created a sheet music score of it and got her in touch with Jaime Cardenas' Authentic Ragtime Company to have it published. I asked her what title she wanted to give to it, and she decided upon Dancing Tones, as she plays piano for a ballet school in Poland.

Here it is played by Tom Brier at the 2009 West Coast Ragtime Festival, 22 November 2009 in Sacramento, California, during his set of contemporary rags other than his own.

  • hi where i can find sheet music from this song

  • @peruanadaz I made a score for it but you should ask Natalia if you can have a copy. Her YouTube account is "myslnat1".

  • Do you ever drum/ tap your fingers on your camcorder whilst recording?

  • No, but I did hit the camera with a kazoo in a video of Good Gravy Rag, where there's a break in the music.

  • Some weird things going on with the stereo spectrum... the conversion before upload to YouTube has it too. I might have to keep the AAC down to 44.1kHz instead of the 48 kHz it's at now, and see what that does. But it's well past bed time now. I've spent all night trying to get this looking and sounding right. Never thought a new camera would pose so much trouble when the old one's videos worked perfectly, albeit at a low quality.

  • At least so far the AAC audio, although encoded at the same bitrate as the original, doesn't seem to be full of static like it was when uploaded in the original AC3 format. But of course the video isn't finished processing as I write this... so YouTube still has time to mess it up.

  • I've watched this so many times, well done for spotting the original

  • First couple of times thru I noticed a big difference in added expression, re: your new recorder. I have to download and save videos because I am on dial-up. On successive playing a don't notice the extra expression as vividly. My tech seemed to have an explanation which I could not possibly re-iterate! LOL Anyway, it is quite a successful composition, rendition and video. I like the piece very much. Only thing I don't like is the name! :-)

  • Good job once again :)

  • This is great!

  • Nice! "Dancing Tones" is a really nice rag. It's posted on the Authentic Ragtime website.

  • Flawless! It's Like Night And Day From The Earlier Upload! Fantastic *****!
