On Monday the 20th August 2007 West Conwy police received a report of a young child , Sean Laxen having fallen into the water at Conwy Falls. An immediate search commenced and despite two days of intensive searching by specialist search team staff they were unable to locate Sean and on the 21st August 2007 at approx 18:10 hours the body of the little boy was found.
The search involved Ogwen Valley mountain rescue team, North East Wales Search and Rescue, Plas Y Brennin, Rescue 4 Uk, specialist fast water search personnel from the Fire Service, Tim Vollum and local water rescue teams; Emergency services such as RAF mountain rescue, North Wales Fire and Rescue, Police Joint underwater Search Unit and North Wales Ambulance Service -- all supported by helicopters from RAF Valley Search and Rescue, Air Ambulance and North Wales Police. And many members of the public with specialist skills.
Whilst it was a tragedy for this to happen, the dedication and commitment of those involved can not be adequately described. As the incident commander I was extremely proud of every person who assisted during the tragic event.
This family of Sean Laxen have added their own tribute, when they returned to North Wales and presented a cheque for £1,941 to the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team.
'Sean enjoyed his previous visit to North Wales in 2005 and in particular Beddgelert and the Snowdon Mountain Railway and he was enjoying the delights again this time. So even though he has been tragically taken away from us in North Wales this does not detract form the natural beauty that abounds and will enthral and enlighten visitors in the future.
We would like to take this opportunity to show our appreciation to North Wales Police for their empathetic manner when assisting us during this tragic time and eternal gratitude to all the services who were also involved in the search for Sean. Also, Norfolk Constabulary for their professional and sympathetic support on our return home to Norfolk.'
While the outcome here was tragedy, the respect is not lessened for the dedicated men and women who assisted.
