Vera Ellen was great because not only could she tap as well as the legendary Ginger Rogers and Eleanor Powell, she could do great modern jazz and ballet moves as well as the amazing Cyd Charisse. She was so versatile.

If you notice, ALL of the dancers/background folks in the group scene are in flats. This would have been decided by the costumer and perhaps the choreographer. There are other movies in which Vera-Ellen danced in heels (such as White Christmas)

We still have some of that, just in a different style.
Anything written by Alan Menken, the music from "Book of Mormon" (which is actually pretty good), Light in the Piazza (written by the grandson of Richard Rogers) are a few modern classics.
If you want harmonies, listen to the Newsies Broadway soundtrack, those harmonies are amazing!

wonder why Vera didn't wear heels for this part which Cyd typically wore? Just an observation but two different styles of dancer, certainly.

Give some credit to the composers of this age as well, please, not just the dancers! Rodgers, Kern, Gershwin - craftsmen who wrote memorable tunes and harmony to match...then compare that to the junk we get these days.
