How to Change the Battery in a Volkswagen Car Key

1. Flip out the metal key.

2. Wedge the screwdriver into the crack that runs on the outside of the key fob.

3. Carefully twist the screwdriver to pry apart the two halves of the key fob. You will see the battery inside.

4. Use the tip of the screwdriver to push out the old battery.

5. Insert the new battery in its place.

6. Snap the two halves of the key fob back together.

Items Needed:
flat thin screwdriver

3V CR2032 lithium battery - about $4.00 @ Target

This demonstration was done on a 2006 jetta key fob that had been run over and was a little mangled - my friend's son had glued some sort of strap to the keyring part making it a little difficult to separate the bottom half to get at the battery - you should have an easier time of it.

  • awesome! i just got the FOB replacement and will stop at target to buy both batteries for both of my keys :D saved me 200$ since the dealer said, "THEY HAD TO REPROGRAM THE KEY"......... Thank you so much Yet again proving me that dealers are just a bunch of thugs

  • @ukyvakrow HEADS UP ->> don't press the remotes after you replace the batteries unless you are close to your car first - I tried resetting my friend's backup keyfob and had pressed it a few times way out of range--- read the manual to try to reprogram it using the main as required and didn't get it to work - probably doing something wrong I guess.

  • whats the cost of a new battery?

  • @400exman02 it uses a pretty standard lithium watch type battery - about $3-5 each - one needed per fob.

  • Thank YOU FOR THIS POST

YOU just made me save 300 bucks for a new key

  • Kudos to you my friend! You may have thought it was no big deal to make this video, but you saved me a lot of trouble. No one in the hardware store or auto parts store would so much as touch my VW keyfob so after a while I thought of checking Youtube. Lo and behold, there you were and your video saved me a lot of money and trouble. Double kudos!
