Team Karlie began in March 2009 with an idea. Burns Middle School staff member Jeff Miller, who is a retired firefighter, coach and long time runner, asked Karlie Hempel's teacher Amanda Owen if there was a way that the school could fund a special jogging stroller for Karlie so she could compete with him in races around Owensboro. Mr. Miller had seen a presentation by Dick Hoyt of Team Hoyt. Team Hoyt is the inspirational story of a father, Dick Hoyt, and his son, Rick Hoyt, who compete together in marathons and triathlons across the country. Team Hoyt and Team Karlie strive to help those with physical disabilities become more active as they participate in a sport and become active members of a community.
Mrs. Owen took this idea and literally ran with it and this is how Team Karlie began. Fellow staff members raised in only 4 days enough money to purchase the stroller and other supplies. Their first race was the BBQ Festival in May 2009 and they received special recognition and a big picture in the paper.
