By the way... The beginning of the video is true footage of the April 3, 1974 tornado from WHIO-TV. WHIO was one of the first television stations in the world to have their own live doppler radar.

This was taken about 30 minutes before the F-5 hit Xenia, OH

I am trying out a new program I have on the computer. This is a generic doppler radar promo I made by using cut and paste features.

  • where can you get this??

  • Be more specific... What in particular are you looking for?

  • Does the radar system we have here in the valley, have all of the available features shown in this video?

  • I will never be 100% sure but I have to go with Yes... Some of the features you see in this video are for promo use only b/c if any station were in 3D the entire time, people that do not understand jack about the weather would get upset that they can not follow along.

  • Could you imagine if someone had a VIPIR radar and saw the Greensburg Tornado Echo? The Rotation Size Would Be Huge!

  • Keep in mind that Baron VIPIR is not a new kind of radar, it is just a computer processing system that places the NWS radar images into a 3-D display.

Some of the physical Baron radar systems (like dual-pol) do have a much better physical reading on precip and would have been amazing but we do not (and should) have that in the Miami Valley yet.

  • That was Gil Whitney. He was credited for saving lives in Xenia with that broadcast.

  • Sadly, no. Whitney died November 4, 1982, at the age of 42 of Colon Cancer.

  • Amazing Technology NOW Lets find a Cure for the Common Cold !

  • @vipirradar unfortunately VIPIR is often hyped as being live but the truth is its NOT unless the station has a Baron Radar of their own they can integrate into it. Otherwise its 4-6 minute old NEXRAD data everyone else uses but with 3d manipulation of the map. thats all

  • @romerofan123 there is a difference though. ESP:LIVE, VIPIR and TITAN are NOT radar systems. They are radar display software either through the NWS NEXRAD Network or if the station has a radar built by a manufacturer that is supported by the software display system they can integrate it into the display. Otherwise its just a NEXRAD radar display with cool graphics, icons and fake sweeps

  • @gunnlover

yea..... I can name lot's of stations that have those types of radars. WNEP-TV (here in Northeast Pennsylvania) just acquired somewhat of a Titan. It is a radar that ABC supplies.

  • @romerofan123 KAKE TV in Wichita did. They still have it today. Most all stations in the central plains have VIPIR or Titan or ESP:LIVE

  • @TheFritter04 correct, because its too expensive and no station in Ohio could fund the cost of such a still new technology by themselves. Only the biggest tv stations can afford the 7-figure pricetag of a dual pole radar or 1,000,000 watt doppler, plus dual pole radar is still in the research and testing phase and dual pole radars that are used are co-partnered with a tv station and university because the primary purpose at this time is research for this kind of radar.

  • VIPIR is not a radar, its a display software like google earth. it processes nws nexrad data or live baron doppler data and displays it on a 3d map. same thing with esp:live and titan

  • its all visuals and nothing more, you can get the same data for free from wunderground minus the 3d mapping

  • not true. Doppler radar can only see the lower levels of storms and low level rotation. most tornadoes begin high up in the atmosphere often times overshooting the radar. Doppler radar is good but not perfect

  • your right, a hook doesnt always mean a tornado but it does mean rotation in the clouds
