Trondheim, Norway, August 18 2009: Two maritime robots, also known as unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), autonomously track the motion of a manned ship maneuvering freely in the Trondheimsfjord. The goal of the USVs is to keep a fixed formation geometry with the manned leader vessel during seabed survey operations. This formation control technology can be viewed as a plug-and-play functionality offered to a given vessel such that it can augment its basic survey capacity by attaching or detaching a number of USVs as needed. The technology has been jointly developed by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the company Maritime Robotics.
