The LINPACK Benchmarks are a measure of a system's floating point computing power. It is commonly used rank to Supercomputers in terms of computing power.

In this test, a 5000x5000 matrix was tested and the average of 10 trials were recorded.

Well, I have bunch of MATLAB scripts that runs faster in Linux ;). So, it really depends. There is no best OS. What is good in Linux is: it is stable and free at the same time.

Something to consider about these benchmark results is that the microsoft compiler (likely used for this benchmark) is way better at optimising than gcc (likely used for the linux benchmark). However, this still reflects the fact that many windows programs are compiled using a better compiler making windows applications typically faster.
