Eilean Uibhist mo rùin - sung by Kate MacLean. A video for my mother who is mistakenly assured that I should consider myself to be from Uist. It features a Uist song and Uist scenery on the road to Lochmaddy; a journey I more fondly consider in the opposite direction, straining from the bow of the ship for the first sight of whoever was on Lochmaddy pier to greet me as I came home. I doubt I'm alone in that sentiment, or in recalling these welcoming embraces, while being all too aware there were others around me saying goodbye and wondering 'when' or 'if'. Whichever vessel it is that links us to the mainland, it seems to be its duty to stand witness to those greetings and fond farewells. To be, in equal measure, a blessing and a curse.

  • Absolutely beautiful - not just because the song itself is lovely (and particularly resonates with me because my own family come from Uist), but because Kate has such a sweet, pure voice. Any more songs posted from Kate? I've 'Googled', but no luck!

  • Lovely video, North Uist is without a doubt the most beautiful island! Kate is a friend of mine, lovely song.

  • beautiful song about a beautiful place. My family moved to Lochmaddy in 1958 when I was 4 years old and for the next 10 years I grew up as an islander, learning the language and thinking of myself as being from Uist and being fiercely proud of that. My bubble was burst however when my parents decided to move back to England in 1968. Even after all these years though I still think of myself as an Islander (or exiled incomer if you prefer) and would go back tomorrow if I could!
