Richard Thomas Davis was murdered on July 15 2003 upon return from Iraq. He had witnessed His Battalion Commander murder two Iraq prisoners that he was watching. They had my son murdered to keep him quiet. After all they didn't want Bush, Chaney and Rumsfield to get embarrassed about a war crime. (Lanny Davis).

In the Valley of Elah is a 2007 Academy Award-nominated film written and directed by Paul Haggis, starring Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron, and Susan Sarandon. The films title refers to the Biblical valley where the battle between David and Goliath is said to have taken place.

Although the story has been fictionalized and the names and location have been changed, the plot hews very closely to the story of Richard T. Davis, an Iraq War veteran murdered upon his return home in 2003. Richard Davis's father Lanny Davis, a former military police officer who mounted his own investigation into the crime like the Jones character, commented, "It's a strong movie and a good movie. And it's going to make a lot of people think."

A non-fiction book about the actual murder case, by author Cilla McCain, titled Murder in Baker Company: How Four American Soldiers Killed One Of Their Own is slated for publication in Fall 2009 by Chicago Review Press.[2]

A 2004 report by Mark Boal in Playboy on Richard Davis' murder, entitled "Death and Dishonor", inspired Haggis.[3][4] Davis's story was also told in an episode of the CBS News program 48 Hours Mystery.[5]

The Richard Davis Foundation for Peace works on issues related to Davis's murder, such as improved screening of military recruits. It is compiling a list of suicides and murders connected to the Iraq War, for a memorial.

  • Richard T. Davis is my Second Cousin. Tommy Lee Jones played my Grand uncle. This is a very tragic thing that happened. I watched the 48 hours about him and i was furious as to how the officials were acting towards my Grand uncle when he attempted to find his son.

  • @SexiiChica213 - I'm certainly very sorry this happened in your family. I haven't watched the movie because the violence is just too much. It's hard enough reading about it. The author, Cilla, tried to help your Grand Uncle as much as she could, but as you indicated the officials were horrible and I can understand you being furious. It makes me furious- it happens so much. Take care and I'm really sorry for your familys loss and pain. Patti

  • i am related to the auther

  • @SuperCoolboy45 - I'm sorry I never responded because I just found out how to do it! I asked Cilla and think she said she was your mother. She is one very wonderful caring intelligent woman. You are lucky to have her. Take care, Patti

  • I watched the 48 Hours Mystery segment on Mr. Davis. A very tragic story. Every time I saw the sadness on this young boy's father's face, my heart just broke.

The military needs more transparency and whistle blower protection. Honesty and integrity shouldn't put your life at risk and it is disgusting how the military sacrifices the truth in order to protect little punks.

The guilty parties ought to be sentenced to life.

  • @6151RichmondStreet - I totally agree with everything you said. My only problem is that inmates are often treated better than most people in cities and states who have done nothing wrong. Thank you, Patti

  • My Sister Read The Book About This Solider. And On The Back Or End I Don't Really Know That Much But It Said Her Husband's Death Is Similar I Think in A Way To Richard.T.Davis's Death In A Way. Hmm.... I Just Hope Who Ever Reads Or Sees The Movie That They Will Know How Much People In The Military Are Such Back Stabbing Bastards To Kill A Fellow Soldier That Worked With Them

  • @pattiwoodard Thank you for your reassurance and caring. I appreciate your help in this situation also along with Cilla's. And along with the violence not much is shown. the problem is more of the inapropriateness for young eyes (with the strip club and all). If you end up watching it then i would love to hear what you have to say. thanks. Peace <3

  • @pattiwoodard I am so thankful that Cilla made the movie. I hope it makes people recognize how much the officials miss and misinturperate soldiers and their families. I hope that America and officials learned something from this.
