Calcium-calmodulin dependent protein kinase type II (CaMKII) is a multi-subunit serine-threonine protein involved in regulating many cellular functions. These include long term potentiation (LTP), presynaptic transmitter release and phosphorylation of tryptophan hydroxylase, the rate limiting enzyme for serotonin synthesis. Highest concentrations of CaMKII are found in the hippocampus and neocortex.
